Art Courses Tutored by Sally Pinhey

Sally has taught since 1990 in Dorset, since ‘98 at Kingston Maurward College, and the Springhead Trust, Shaftesbury. She is a regular exhibitor and award winner with the Royal Horticultural Society, and a fellow of the Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium Society.

She is the illustrator of "Pears" (96) and "Plums" (01) by Jim Arbury. See Books.

How to Draw Courses

Coming to teaching through art therapy, Sally developed her own system of teaching parallel to that of Dr Betty Edwards of California. Her adult Starter Classes teaching basic drawing skills are carefully constructed and intensive. She teaches five different ways of observing and portraying three dimensions in two dimensions. They are:

  1. Observing edges (line)
  2. Observing mass (tone)
  3. Observing negative space
  4. Measuring
  5. Perspective

By using exercises that block of the left hand side of the brain, she can show students how to see as an artist sees. The starter courses finish with sessions on composition and colour.

Let's play with some words. What do you see?

You may not see it at first, but the white spaces read the word optical, the blue landscape reads the word illusion. Look again! Can you see why this painting is called an optical illusion?

Try This - Read the Colour Not the Word!

If you can do it easily you are probably right-brained and will have no difficulty in seeing as an artist sees. If you are hesitant you are probably left-brained and have a very literal approach to art. Both ways of seeing can profit from the HOW TO DRAW COURSE.

Botanical Art Courses

Sally’s Short Botanical courses cover the essential skills for illustrating plants accurately in watercolour within the context of the student’s own project. Courses cover planning, drawing and composition, washes, shadow and structures, coping with detail and some tips on techniques and presentation.

Try This - Plants in Perspective

To draw a plant in perspective draw a vertical stem first,. Then keeping your head absolutely still use the vertical as a measure to place the shapes of the foreshortened leaves or flowers where they touch it.

What do you see?

In this picture of positive and negative spaces, an adult sees lovers, a child sees dolphins...

Watercolour Improver Courses

These courses provide the settings and the exercises to improve watercolour techniques. Drawing and perspective are also revised and incorporated into the exercises. Summer classes take place out of doors in choice settings, and emphasis is placed on tackling problem subjects within a widely varied programme. Winter work is done in inspiring studio surroundings, again with a varied programme designed to stretch the artist.

Try This - Take Your Seat

For landscape painting, always take your own chair and spend some time choosing where you sit. The view you choose could be the single most important decision you make.

What do you see here?

This one is quite tricky! The word TEACH reflects as LEARN.

Last one. What do you see?

You probably read the word ME in brown, but........
when you look through ME you will see YOU!
